How Often to Change Your Oil

Recommended Frequency

3,000-7,500 miles

The old 3,000-mile rule is dead for most cars... but not all of them. If you're running full synthetic oil in a 2012 or newer vehicle with normal driving habits, you can safely go 7,500 miles between changes. Some manufacturers like BMW and Toyota push it to 10,000 miles with their factory-fill synthetic. But here's where it gets real. If your car still uses conventional oil, 3,000 to 5,000 miles is the right window. Conventional oil breaks down faster under heat and loses its viscosity, which means your engine parts start grinding sooner. Synthetic blend splits the difference at 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Your owner's manual has the exact interval for your engine... follow it, not the sticker the quick-lube place slaps on your windshield. They have every incentive to get you back in 3,000 miles whether you need it or not. That said, there are real situations where shorter intervals matter. Frequent short trips under 10 miles are brutal on oil because the engine never fully warms up, so moisture and fuel contaminate the oil faster. Stop-and-go city driving, towing, and dusty conditions all count as severe service... and most manufacturer schedules have a separate (shorter) interval for severe conditions. If you do a lot of idling, that counts too. The engine is running and degrading the oil even though the odometer isn't moving. Modern cars with oil life monitoring systems take the guesswork out. The sensor tracks engine temperature, RPM, and driving patterns to calculate remaining oil life. When it says 15%... don't push it to 0%. Schedule the change. Skipping oil changes is the single fastest way to destroy an engine. Sludge builds up, oil passages clog, and by the time you hear knocking, you're looking at a $3,000 to $6,000 engine replacement. A $50 oil change every 5,000 miles is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

What Affects the Schedule

Oil type

Full synthetic lasts 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Synthetic blend goes 5,000 to 7,500. Conventional oil needs changing every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The price difference per change is $30 to $40... the extended interval makes synthetic cheaper long-term.

Driving conditions

Short trips under 10 miles, stop-and-go traffic, towing, dusty or gravel roads, and frequent idling all count as severe service. Under severe conditions, cut your interval by 30 to 40%.

Vehicle age and mileage

Engines with over 75,000 miles have wider tolerances and may consume oil between changes. High-mileage formulas with seal conditioners help, but you should check the dipstick monthly and top off as needed.

Climate

Extreme heat breaks oil down faster. Extreme cold thickens it on startup, causing more wear. If you live somewhere with 100-degree summers or subzero winters, lean toward the shorter end of your interval.

Turbocharged engines

Turbo engines run hotter and put more stress on oil. Many turbocharged vehicles specify 5,000-mile intervals even with synthetic. Check your manual... turbo engines are less forgiving of extended intervals.

Signs You're Overdue

  • ⚠️Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick... fresh oil is amber and translucent, used oil turns black and feels gritty between your fingers.
  • ⚠️Engine sounds louder than usual... old oil loses viscosity and the increased metal-on-metal contact creates a ticking or knocking sound, especially on cold starts.
  • ⚠️Oil change or maintenance light is on... modern oil life monitors are surprisingly accurate, don't ignore them.
  • ⚠️Exhaust smoke has a blue tint... this can indicate oil is burning due to degradation or low levels, which means you're past due.
